Cotton didn't really mind that the Captain seemed to be collecting animals as they went through this war; he liked animals and always had. So long as they didn't take all his free time in looking after them, he was more than happy to put up with them.

The fact that the newest addition was a puppy was, on the face of it, simply interesting. Cotton had bartered for some old scraps of leather and other bits and pieces from a nearby cavalry unit and was at work making a collar and lead for the thing; the Captain's other dog had been sent wearing a collar and with a lead, and while he had been asked (though it was an order, it had been phrased as a request) to furnish the puppy with the same, it was his own decision to make the new ones match Ajax's as closely as he could.

He was whistling as he worked on what would become the collar, enjoying the warmth of the sun and grateful that at this time of year it was nothing like as fierce as it was in summer. It wasn't as cold as an English winter, either, which he appreciated - although that just meant that summers were much hotter here, too.

Sitting in the sunshine with something to keep his hands occupied that wasn't just make-work... it was pretty well perfect.

He looked up as a shadow fell over him. "Good mornin'!" he said cheerfully.

"Hullo," Sam replied, gazing down at the seated Rifleman. He'd noticed the fellow earlier but paid him little mind. Now, though, he had reason to. "I think this is yours?"

He lifted his left arm a little, making the beaming puppy tucked into his elbow a little more obvious. The little creature had been lurking with puppyish innocence around the light company's cook fires, until Sam, who recognised it, scooped it up for returning to its master. This Rifleman was not actually the puppy's master but he was close enough.

"Oh help," Cotton said, noticing what the other man was holding. "Yes - well, that is, no, but he does belong to me officer. C'mere, you." He held his hands out for the puppy, which was shivering with excitement.

"Hope he hasn't et anythin' of yourn?" he asked, knowing just how destructive puppies could be, even when they intended no harm. He hoped he could get the collar finished before Benjy wandered off and got completely lost.

The wriggling little scamp offered a happy yap as Sam handed it over. "He's only had a couple scraps of gristle," he replied, "but they mighta be a grand feast, fast's he swallowed 'em down."

None of the lads had minded having the pupper around, which was the real danger. This was not their dog and they couldn't get attached to it. Even if they sometimes felt the Rifles were keeping all the friendly canine companions to themselves!
